In view of tiger poaching cases reported in Sharda range of Haldwani division recently, the state forest department is laying emphasis on tiger conservation in adjoining forest divisions of Corbett Tiger Reserve (CTR)

S.S. Sharma, chief wildlife warden told Hindustan Times that besides Haldwani foerst division, Terai east, Terai west, Terai central, Ramnagar and other areas would be included in the plan.

He said, “We have realised that divisions surrounding CTR are too sensitive with respect to tiger conservation. Therefore, we are planning to strengthen these divisions so that the department may keep close watch on such incidents.”

It is pertinent to mention here that seven people were arrested in the tiger poaching case. Notably, all of them were Gujjars of Haldwani forest division. As a result, it was concluded that tribes like sapera were not the only key people behind tiger poaching in uttarakhand. Gujjars, too were equally involved.

“Seven Gujjars were arrested in tiger poaching case. We analysed that sapera community people were not he only ones behind poaching and animal part trading. Gujjars too contributed to the crime” Sharma said.

Sharma has made a detailed plan of strengthening adjoining foerst divisions of CTR. He has planned to provide extensive training capacity building know how of intelligence and crime detection to the forest guards as well as the staff.

Besides, in association with anti-poaching cell, it is planned to choose villagers as undercover sources. These sources will be put to use to curb tiger poaching and animal part trading. According to the fresh tiger census of India, Uttarakhand reported 227 tigers. The population is +49 in the state in comparison to the last census in 2008.
