India Most Vulnerable to Climate Change: Omkar Singh (k)

Omkar Singh, Deputy Director General (Education) ICFRE said that Climate Change was a major challenge for developing countries like India where communities depends heavily on natural resources like forest. He said that in the recent years, Climate Change has become one of the few issues that have received tremendous global attention.

Singh speaking on the occasion of the inaugural session of the training programme on 'Climate Change and Carbon Mitigation for the scientists and technologists working in the Government sector at ICFRE here today. Singh further said that Government of India had launched the Indian Network of Climate Change Assessment (INCCA), a network-based program coordinated by Ministry of Environment and Forests, which would undertake ambitious program of Climate Change assessment. ‘Green India Mission’ of the Government of India had a major thrust of bringing 10 Mha of degraded forest land under tree cover. Dr. Renu Singh, Head, Biodiversity and Climate Change Division and the Course Director while welcoming the participants highlighted the course structure. Dr. Singh told about various national and international institutions dealing with Climate Change mitigation. She informed that Climate Change Division at ICFRE was actively engaged in the capacity building programs of the various stakeholders including Scientists and Technologists working in the Government sector.

The Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) Dehradun is organizing a five days training program on 'Climate Change and Carbon Mitigation' from November 14-18 for the scientists and technologists working in government sector. In all 30 scientists and technologists from 15 states representing department and ministries of Central Government, Public sector Units, and Government aided Research Institutes, Central and State Universities are participating in the training program.

Dr. Anita Srivastava conducted the inaugural session. V.R.S. Rawat proposed the vote of thanks. Dr. Rabindra Kumar, DDG (Extension) Sandeep Triapthi Director (Projects and International Cooperation), ICFRE and other officers and scientist of ICFRE and FRI were present on the occasion.
