NEW DELHI: To create a "digital media literacy movement among the youth", Digital Youth Media (DYM) conducted a series of filmmaking workshops for schools across the Capital during the past four months. The workshop series culminates in a filmmaking competition where over 450 students of Classes IX and above from nearly 30 schools came together to create 25 films. These would be screened at Siri Fort Auditorium here this Tuesday.

In January this year, DYM had announced the student filmmaking competition - "Digidreamz Youth Film Fest 2006" which they are promoting with support from Netvideo and Youth Connect India. When approaching the school authorities, DYM realised that almost all the schools in the Capital had neither the infrastructure nor the required staff to conduct an audio-visual programme. Consequently, DYM conducted two-day filmmaking workshops at the schools, including Frank Anthony Public School, St. Columba's School, Laxman Public School, Carmel Convent, the Barakhamba Road and Vasant Vihar branches of Modern School and Delhi Public School at R.K. Puram.

DYM also provided the schools with filmmaking kits that consisted of cameras, film, lighting equipments and tripods, which the students used to make their films.

"The students showed great enthusiasm and grasped ideas readily. Being given the theme of "Environment", the students have made films to increase awareness about water and air pollution, two major ecological problems that the city faces. These 25 films showcase the students' passion for their city as well as filmmaking. From ideating to editing, all films have been made entirely by the students," said DYM Director Vijji Parangat.

The films being screened at Siri Fort Auditorium will be judged in five categories best idea, best performance, best camera work, best editing and best film.
