Pollution threatens rare species in Vietnam

Since 1996, Vietnam has about 152 rare animal and plant species that are on the brink of extinction owing to air pollution, says a survey by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the United Nations Development Programme.

Some of these species have only few individuals alive, such as dicerorhinus sumatrensis, tapirus indicus, cynogale bennettii, cervus nippon, procypris merus and crocodylus porosus.

This serious situation was attributed to the increasing environmental pollution, forest destruction and forest fires, according to the survey.

Even though investment in biodiversity conservation projects accounts for 20-30 per cent of the country’s funding for the environment, the quality of protection work remains low, believe environmentalists.
