NOIDA: Noida Authority on Wednesday invited private companies to set up a state-of-the-art integrated waste collection, processing and solid waste disposal facility. Even after being into existence for the past 41 years, the city is yet to manage its waste.

Officials said Noida Authority will implement a scientific management and disposal of the municipal solid waste generated in the city in order to comply with the Solid Waste (Management & Handling) Rules, 2016, enacted by the Union ministry of environment, forests and climate change.

"We have initiated an expression of interest (EOI) for setting up a facility of suitable capacity for scientific dealing of the waste," said R.S Yadav, senior project engineer (public health), Noida. "Interested companies can send the details of the mechanism and technology through which they wish to provide feasible and sustainable solutions by August 23," he said.

"Capable companies will be shortlisted for making a presentation of their plans. Thereafter, a request for proposal will be called for and the company will be selected," Yadav said.

Currently, Noida generates a whopping 600 tonnes of municipal waste every day. About 1,600 health department workers strive to keep the city clean. With the help of residents' welfare associations (RWAs), Noida Authority has put into place a mechanism to deal with the garbage. It has hired garbage collectors on contract, who collect and dispose the same but in a disorganised manner, leaving the city littered and in a mess.

Despite an annual budget of Rs 140 crore, residents complain that the waste is being dumped in an unscientific manner at a temporary landfill site near Sector 137, thus posing health risk to residents. Also there is no system for treating or recycling the municipal waste scientifically in Noida.

Amit Mohan Prasad CEO of Noida Authority, however, said that all this is about to change. "Waste management is my priority and the need of the hour, considering the city has been lacking an efficient waste disposal system for so long. 'Clean Noida, Green Noida' is the city's slogan and we are making all possible efforts to achieve this. Once our plans fructify, Noida will get a facelift, which has been due for some time now," he said.
