Environment Minister, Imran Hussain on Wednesday announced the deployment of 'Environment Marshalls' in various parts of the national Capital to control the illegal burning of leaves or garbage in open, control of dust emanating from various sources and improper management of dhalaos — major factors contributing to air pollution.

Around 14 home guards (volunteers) have been deployed as marshalls in seven wards of three municipal corporations, including three in East Corporation and two each in South and North Corporations. These wards include Anand Vihar, I P Extension, Jhilmil, Daryaganj, Okhla, Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar-SamaypurBadli and ShahbadDaulatpur-PoothKhurd.

"A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) has also been developed for the working of the scheme. In the coming days, the Department of Environment plans to increase the number of marshalls to 100 who will be deployed in 50 wards across three corporations," said a senior official.

The department had organised a training programme for the marshals at the Delhi Secretariat. "The incumbents have been given basic inputs about their functioning under the scheme.," the official said.
