Wildlife Week 2017 Celebrated in Kiphire

The Kiphire Wildlife Division, Department of Environment Forests & Climate Changein collaboration with Greenland Society on 6th Oct 2017 celebrated Wildlife Week 2017 in Muytei Project Area near Anatongre village which is 22 KMs away from Kiphire town, Nagaland. The program was marked by painting competition, Quiz and essay writing contest.

The program began with a prayer from the Pastor Anatongre village. The program was attended by Village Council Chairmen (VCC), Head Gaon Burra (HGB), Gaon Burra (GB) and public from Anatongre, Maipok, Nutsü and Pokphur villages. The program was also attended by students and teachers from Government Public School (GPS) Anatongre, Christian School Anatongre, Government High School (GHS) Anatongre and also byKiphire Bharat Scouts and Guides headed by Ms Imtinaro HQ (DOC)G who took part in the competitions actively.

In his keynote address, Jongyanthong Chairman Greenland Society appreciated the efforts of the Forest Department in making such a program happen for the first time in the history in that area. R Joseph Kius, President Tikhir Tribal Union explained the importance of conservation and to safeguard the wildlife in the area. He called for the collaborative public support in conservation efforts.

R Santsu Kithan, District Agricultural Officer (DAO) explained beautifully about the importance of all types of wildlife from big to small including microorganisms like bacteria. He cited the examples of how bees single handedly help in pollination and how their disappearance will affect the food chain. He also cited the example of an apex predator like tiger which keeps the food chain in balance. The missing of a top predator means that an increase in lower food chain animals that leads to imbalance in the ecosystem.

M Tsülimthong, VCC Anatongre appreciated the efforts of Greenland Society and the Kiphire Wildlife Division in conducting an awareness program in the area and extended support in such activities henceforth.

The Chief Guest – Suman W M Sivachar IFS, Wildlife Warden Kiphire explained how each animal in the food chain have their own importance. Wild boar for example while may be considered as a pest to the farmer in farms but performs an important task in the regeneration of forests. Only human beings with their power of rational thinking and empathy can think and protect the wildlife. Young minds who are the future citizens of our nation are capable of protecting the wildlife. Their essays and paintings in the competitions suggest the same he said.

A female dance troupe – Kiukhian-Kiuphulong, Anatongre village presented the public with a mesmerizing cultural dance performance marked the end of the program. More than 200 people participated in the program with 45 participants in the various competitions.
