Delhi: More than 20,000 kg of plastic carry bags seized after recently imposed ban

More than 20,000 kilograms of plastic carry bags (less than 50 microns) have been seized by various agencies across Delhi as a part of the ongoing operations to effectively implement the plastic ban in the national capital.

In a meeting convened by Environment Minister Imran Hussain on Tuesday, with senior officers from Environment Department and Delhi Pollution Control Committee, the progress on various environmental issues including implementation of the ban on less than 50 microns plastic carry bags, anti fire-crackers campaign and Air Pollution was reviewed.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) order on August 10 had directed for complete ban on use of Plastic Carry bags made of plastic less than 50 microns and non-compostable in entire Delhi.

Delhi Pollution Control Committee has constituted different teams to ensure the compliance of the directions regarding prohibition on the use of above kind of Plastic Carry Bags in Delhi.

During the meeting, officers informed the Minister that directions of NGT are being implemented by all concerned departments and plastic carry bags are being seized and notices are being issued.

The Minister also directed the officers for strictly implementing the directions of NGT with respect to sale, storage and use of less than 50 micron plastic carry bags at the shops, markets and other establishments and send regular action taken report.

As per the reports submitted by various departments, a total of 20,008 kg of plastic carry bags (less than 50 microns) have been seized, 1108 notices have been issued and a total amount of Rs 17, 30,000 has been realised as Environment compensation.
