20,000 kg plastic carry bags seized

NEW DELHI: Acting on the directions of National Green Tribunal (NGT), more than 20,000 kilograms of plastic carry bags (less than 50 microns) have been seized by various agencies across Delhi. The tribunal had directed for complete ban on use of plastic carry bags made of plastic less than 50 microns and non-compostable in entire Delhi. It also directed that if any person is found in possession or uses such Plastic Bags, he shall be liable to pay compensation of Rs. 5,000 per default.

As per reports, submitted by various departments, a total of 20,008 kg of plastic carry bags (less than 50 microns) have been seized, 1108 challans have been issued and a total of Rs 17,30,000, amount has been realized as Environment compensation. The figures were presented during a meeting, convened by Environment Minister Imran Hussain on Tuesday, with senior officers from Environment Department and Delhi Pollution Control Committee to review the progress on various environmental issues including implementation of the ban on less than 50 microns plastic carry bags, anti fire-crackers campaign and air pollution.

Officers informed the Minister that directions of NGT are being implemented by all concerned departments and plastic carry bags are being seized and challans are being issued. The Minister directed the officers for strictly implementing the directions of NGT.
