Centre gears up to control pollution ahead of Diwali, FIFA, winters

With Diwali and winters and FIFA world cup 2017 not far away, the Centre today called environment ministers of different states, and also officials from the department related to air pollution to revive the situation and revise strategies for compliance of environmental norms. The Central Pollution Control Board has formed 40 teams to collect inputs regarding the air pollution, and to begin with these teams have been formed for Delhi and similar exercise would be done for other states later. Briefing mediapersons about the meeting, Union Environment Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan said that the government last year gave a detailed instruction to the states about major air pollution issues and was expecting better result this year. As this year, India is organising FIFA world cup 2017, Dr Vardhan said, "within this month, we will send letters to states representatives and asked them to put this issue in their radar, as if the air pollution problem rises during the world cup, it will be very embarrassing for the country."Talking about the usage of Biomass, Dr Vardhan said, "We have given instruction to states that instead of burning the biomass, we should utilise it in different scientific techniques, through which we can turn waste into wealth."In the meeting, Dr Vardhan asked the officials to work proactively, aggressively and an innovative manner to find the solutions of all problems. He even asked them to find new ideas and solution out of the box for the improvement in environment. Talking about the reasons behind air pollution, he said, there are re multiple factor behind the cause of air pollution, like transport, building material, dust, biomass burning, industrial pollutant. "To decrease the air pollution during Diwali, we has contacted different schools through emails and asked them to run awareness programe," he said, adding, "we have urged school children and youth to make their contribution in saving environment by not burning crackers."Last year air pollution in Dehli reached much higher than the permissible limits in which burning of stubbles in the post harvest season in neighboring states had made a major contribution, following which the Delhi government has resorted to the controversial odd even scheme to control the pollution.
