NEW DELHI: Environment minister Imran Hussain on Wednesday held a meeting with the forest department, DMRCand PWD to explore ways to increase green cover on open pavements, central verges and underneath flyovers and Metro tracks. He also directed the agencies to prepare an action plan on the same to be submitted in a week.

The move comes after Hussain set a target of planting 11.6 lakh tree and 9.22 lakh shrubs saplings for the year 2017-18, with instructions to also carry out extra plantations if the targets for the previous year were not met.

Hussain asked to departments to explore the possibilities of carrying out plantations on various sites on a continual and sustainable-basis, including vertical towers and pillars of flyovers and Metro structures. He said that such structures would not only ensure that dust and air pollutions were controlled but would also add to city's beauty.

The minister further asked the departments to ensure that these plants were watered regularly and asked to adopt new technologies to improve their survival rate.
