Chandigarh, May 16 Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar today directed officials to work towards making the state polythene-free.

"To make Haryana polythene-free, directions have been issued to the state's Industries and Commerce Department to seek alternatives for polythene," he said.

Khattar was speaking at a workshop 'Connecting People to the Nature' for Panchayati Raj Institutions and Urban Local Bodies members in Panchkula, near here.

He said the state will have to be made pollution-free for which people would have to change their behaviour.

Emphasis will be laid on utilisation of crop residue as burning it not only causes air pollution but also decreases fertility of the soil, he said.

Notably, Haryana has become kerosene-free as the supply of the fuel has been stopped under the Public Distribution System from April 1.
