The Delhi Government has authorised 37 e-waste collection centres for disposal of unusable old mobile phones, computers, laptops, television sets and other electronic material, in order to reduce air pollution in the city. This was announced today by Delhi Environment Minister Imran Hussain, who addressed a workshop here on 'e-Waste Management for bulk consumers,' organised by the Environment Department. Speaking at the programme, Mr Hussain stressed upon the importance of creating public awareness about the hazards of improper disposal of e-waste.Raising concern over the unauthorised dismantling and recycling of e-waste, which was posing a great danger to the human health and environment, the Minister said it should be disposed off only to the Delhi Pollution Control Committee authorised collection centres, in strict adherence to the E-waste Management Rules. Mr Hussain said besides authorising collection centres, the concerned agencies need to make available disposal facilities for handling e-waste. He also observed that practice of burning of e-waste for extracting various metals is a big menace, which needs to be curbed and appealed to the public to lend support. UNI DS RJ 1946
