Another Sariska tiger gets radio collar

The forest officials finally managed to put a radio collar around the neck of three-year-old tiger, ST-11, in the Akbarpur forest range of Sariska Tiger Reserve (STR) Tuesday.

This was the third attempt at collaring the big cat that had been moving in the Alwar buffer zone for past one year, officials said. Reserve officials along with experts from the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, worked together to collar the tiger.

ST-11 is the first tiger born in the STR after relocation of the big cats from Ranthambore National Park, they added. It was born to ST-10 and grew up in Decera, Lodge and Rampur forest areas of the reserve, said STR field director RS Shekhawat said.

Shekhawat confirmed that ST-11 has been fitted with a very high-frequency radio collar for effective monitoring.

Sariska had lost all its tigers to poaching by 2005. The reserve was repopulated with tigers relocated from Ranthambore. So far, eight tigers have been brought to SawaiMadhopur to STR, which is now home to 14 big cats, including nine females. At present, seven of the reintroduced tigers have radio collars around their necks. Radio collar of ST-2, a tigress, was removed as her territory is without human interface.
