Industries under 'White Category' don't need green clearance says CPCB

Union Environment Ministry has introduced new category called 'White' for industry sectors. Under 'White' category industries falling in 36 industries will not require environmental clearance.

The Ministry has reclassified the industries into various categories with an intention to easing out of rules for Clearance of Non-Polluting Industrial Projects. The government introduced a new classification of industries that uses colour codes to denote environmental impact, a move that meant 36 industries may need no green clearance at all.

Through a written reply in Rajya Sabha Minister of State (Independent Charge) of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Anil Madhav Dave stated that Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in consultation with Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has reclassified the industries into various categories.

The industries have been reclassified under Red, "Orange", "Green" and "White" category, as part of policies and objective of government to promote 'Ease of Doing Responsible Business.' This will take care of 80% of emissions from industrial sector and will bring transparency in implementation of pollution control regulations,� the official said.

The industrial projects under the new category of "White", which is practically non-polluting, will not require either Environmental Clearance under Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 or Consent under Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 and Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974.

There are 36 industry sector which fall under 'White' category which includes bio fertilisers, bio pesticides, medical oxygen, electrical and electronic items, cotton and woollen hosieries, organic manure.
