50 kg Sea Cucumbers seized, 2 held

The Forest department and Marine police seized 50 kg Sea Cucumbers, an endangered marine species and arrested two persons in this connection at Muthammal Colony, here today. Police said acting on a tip-off, a joint team comprising Forest department officials and Marine police conducted raid in a house and effected the seizure. The accused, identified as K Velmurugan (34) and S Ram (67) hailing from Ramanathapuram district, were arrested for illegally hoarding the processed marine species.

Poaching and trading of Sea Cucumbers, listed in Schedule 1 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 was prohibited in India and several foreign countries.
