Members of the Rajya Sabha today expressed concern over the rising air pollution in the country urging the Government to take necessary step to check the problem.Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Naresh Agrawal of the Samajwadi Party said that 10 lakh people die annually due to air pollution in the country. He said 94 cities in 22 states were highly polluted and in Delhi the situation was alarming with particulate matters being more than the permissible level.Mr Agrawal said that Haryana was the main contributor of pollution in the National Capital as farmers in the state were burning stubble. If the situation was not addressed then it would go out of control and "India will become the world's most polluted country," he said.Rajeev Shukla of the Congress said that the House should also take up a discussion on cleaning of the river Ganga.DPTripathi of the NCP, while referring to the World Happiness report by UN, said that it was unfortunate that India has been placed at 122 position. He said even neighbouring countries like Pakistan, Bhutan and Nepal were much higher than India. He said that the people here were sad due to the false slogan of "acchedin"."After the Government came to power, acche din had not come but buriraat had come and due to the atmosphere of fear people were getting sleepless nights resulting in their unhappiness," he said.TK Rangarajan of the CPI-M, while raising the issue of the pathetic condition of coconut cultivators, urged the Government to look into their issues sympathetically.
