NAVI MUMBAI: The mangrove cell of the forest departmentwill map the green cover with its record of 2005 to find out if any mangrove has got destroyed due to debri dumping on a big area admeasuring around 25000 sqft behind Swaminarayan temple, Vashi bordering sector 10 A an 11.
Range forest officer, P Chaudhary told TOI Monday, "We will use the map of mangrove growth of 2005 as per order of Bombay high court to reference the record to find out any damage wrought, and accordingly take action. The area under debri is Cidco land for crematorium for gaothan and in this regard we have communicated to Cidco. But, due to mangroves all around the debris, it would be surely better to confirm the damage done to mangroves.''
A proposal for fencing the walkway submitted to the mangrove cell by the Airoli sub divisional office from the temple to sector 28 is also pending for around one to two month. There are several spots where debri and variety waste like plastic have been deposited, some of which have been flushed to the deep interiors of the mangroves due to high tide.
Meanwhile, Sahayak, NGO (socio legal and educational forum) that has taken up the issue has shot off mail and complaints to several authorities regarding the debri land. The mail sent to Union minister of environment, forest and climate change, Anil Dave, MoEF, chief secretary besides others has asked for an integrated and coordinated approach to resolve the nagging issue of mangrove destruction in the city.
In the mail, secretary, Sahayak, Hemant Sahay has suggested "interlinking of various bodies of government (like local police, municipal corporation, forest department, law and judiciary, urban development and revenue departments" for a coordinated approach in tackling the menace and prompt action for a better climate and healthy environment.
Sharma said there was a pattern by vested interests to reclaim mangrove and wetlands at the cost of damaging environment.
