Manipur’s climate change adaptation activities draw global attention

IMPHAL, NOVEMBER 13: Presentation by Manipur officials representing Indian delegation in the ongoing Conference of Parties (COP 22) of the United Nations Framework Convention on climate change at Marrakech in Morocco drew attention from global audience particularly delegates from Japan, Indonesia and Tanzania, reports reaching here said.

Dr. T Brajakumar informed this in an emailed from Marrakech after successfully making a presentation on the 5th day of COP 22 which started from November 7.

He said, “The participants of the session were impressed by the concept developed for implementing the climate change adaptation activities through the communities by integrating the line departments and local experts in Manipur.”

Besides his presentation on “Carbon neutral eco-village in the Himalaya ecosystems: blending traditional and modern adaptation practices,” Dr. Brajakumar, Deputy Director of Manipur’s environment department, also screened a 3 minutes video on model carbon positive eco-model activities taken up at Phayeng village in Manipur’s Imphal West district during the United Nations Development Programme session on “Innovation to enhance climate actions at sub national level” at the Indian pavilion of the convention.

Interestingly, Additional Chief Secretary (Forest and Environment) Shambhu Singh of Manipur government, who was a panelist during the session, also shared the experiences about the ongoing climate change adaptation practices by forming different layers of committees at administration level, sectoral working groups level and many sub-committees mostly with the communities.

Reacting to the questions during the discussion, Shambhu also informed the gathering that such kind of activities involving the experts – government and community would be first of its kind in the region.

It may be worth mentioning here that both Manipur officials were nominated as Indian delegates along with representatives from 14 Indian states for the first time in the history of global climate change negotiation organised by United Nation Framework Convention for Climate Change with active participation of delegates from 192 countries.

Many international negotiations on climate change mitigation and adaptations amongst the countries will be continued till November 18.
