TRUMP AND THE PARIS PACT

The Paris climate deal is a historic step in reducing the mounting emission levels on this planet. When the new American administration under Donald J Trump takes over, one of the most contentious issues that it has to handle is the climate agreement. President-elect Trump must put forward all necessary initiatives to bring it to the implementation stage. Indeed, the climate agreement is not about America alone; it has the endorsement of nearly 190 nations who have decided to march for a greener world. Any attempt by the US to derail or back out from the agreement, will send a wrong message to the global community. Trump must not allow negative vibes to surround his presidency before it gained ground. It would be better for him to make a robust administration on the foundations of well-established cosmopolitan values of American society. As the popular mandate has been given to him, he must show to the world what his country stands for and what the immediate concerns of his countrymen are. Trump knows well enough, and that is why the American people have voted him to ‘make America great again'.

Reports say that Trump is looking for legal options to move out of the Paris agreement. Along with him, Team Trump must realise the fact that America under President Barack Obama has already initiated a slew of policy measures to implement clean energy options. In the last four to eight years, the country has been fast shifting towards the direction of cleaner energy, with many States actively working on bringing solar and wind energy into application. Notably, more than 40 per cent of America is already into a climate regime, which was embodied in the Paris agreement and in the Clean Power Plan (CPP) rule brought by the Obama Administration. The CPP, introduced by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in August 2015, had the final aim to reduce carbon pollution from power plants, the nation's largest source of energy.

Most importantly, the EPA has also been pursuing numerous policies to make energy affordable and reliable at the same time. And, the CPP was reached after decades of unprecedented outreach and public engagement. Thus, there are domestic compulsions for Trump to support the global climate initiative as well. It is time for him to air his future policies towards the deal, as there has been growing apprehension about it in the ongoing UN climate change conference (COP 22) in Marrakesh. He must heed the appeal by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon at Marrakesh before taking any final decision. Countries like India also recently ratified the deal despite having serious reservations. Likewise, many other nations have come forward to be a part of the landmark agreement just to see a carbon-free world. It is hoped that Trump, with all the good intent, will make it happen. America’s presence is vital to steer the deal to a final stage.
