DEHRADUN: Dehradun forest division and members of the NGO Endangered Flora and Fauna on Earth Conservation Team (EFFECT) nabbed two men with four pods containing bear bile at Fatehpur near Doiwala on Saturday evening. The accused have been identified as Dushyant Singh and Ravindra Kumar, both from Guptkashi in Rudraprayag district.

Abhishek Singh, wildlife activist from EFFECT, said, "As soon as we got intelligence about the presence of two men carrying bear bile pods, we along with the forest department began the process of nabbing them. Posing as buyers, we were able to catch them red-handed with four bear bile pods. Almost 10 days ago, two men were caught with two bear bile pods near Muni Ki Reti in Rishikesh. This indicates the rampant poaching of the Himalayan black bear, which is a schedule I species (those whose hunting is prohibited under all circumstances and invites stringent punishment."

Divisional forest official P K Patro said that four bile pods indicated that four black bears had been killed, a serious offence. "The accused are in their mid-twenties, quite young, and unaware about the gravity of their crime. Owing to unemployment in the hills, they commit such crimes and sell each bile pod for as little as Rs 5,000, or whatever they get. They even go into the mountains to collect keerajari and get easy money for it," he added.

Patro said the forest department is trying to bust the black bear poaching network, which kills the animal and dries its bile. The organ is then transported to China where it is used in traditional medicine.
