NEW DELHI: Various government departments have issued challans amounting to Rs 7 crore so far for waste burning and dust pollution at construction sites. The environment department on Monday held a meeting with other agencies, including Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Public Works Department(PWD), the transport department, and the municipal corporations, where action taken reports were submitted. The reports indicated that fines of over Rs 7 crore were imposed. But it's not yet clear how much of this amount has been recovered as many of these cases are pending.

The fines were imposed under National Green Tribunal's orders on Vardhaman Kaushik's petition against severe air pollution in the city. NGT had directed a fine of up to Rs 50,000 on construction sites for violating dust pollution norms, depending on the size of the project, and a penalty of Rs 5,000 on the burning of dry leaves and waste. Syed Musawwir Ali, special secretary (environment), who chaired the meeting, took note of the fact that DDA didn't issue any challan on waste burning in its areas. He directed the SDM to list the complaints of waste burning received from DDA areas to cross check why it didn't impose a penalty on anyone.
