ASIAN COUNTRIES TO BE BIGGEST SUFFERER OF CLIMATE CHANGE’

Noted agricultural scientist Prof Manjit Singh Kang here said that if the world fails to take corrective measures to tackle climate change, the Asian countries will be the biggest sufferer.

Delivering a key note address during one day national conference on environmental sustainability and social dynamics organised by The Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Kang, former Vice Chancellor of PAU, highlighted various aspects of the environment degradation and its impact.

“The studies shows that in next three decades, if we fail to take corrective measures, climate change will lead Climate Poverty and ultimately cause maximum migration in world over.”, he said while adding developed and most populated countries are facing the threat from climate change as it would adversely affect agricultural production which will have cascading effect on economics, food security, Health, social and other political powers. He vowed the public to create awareness about environment as it is set to affect everyone.

In his address, University Grants Commission Secretary Dr. Jaspal S Sandhu asked the participants to switch the greener and renewable energy. He expressed that the people have themselves ruined the natural environment around in race of development and act very irresponsibly when it comes to the nature and its components.

“We are duty bound to leave this earth planet greener and safe for humankind for our younger generations. So everyone should put all needed efforts to work in cutting greenhouse gases emission,” he said.

He added that UGC has made it mandatory to teach environment topics in all under graduate subjects to spread awareness about this challenge which is posing a danger to humankind.

In his presidential remarks Prof Paramjit S Jaswal, Vice Chancellor of RGNUL, emphasized that need to sensitize public and every individual should participate to tackle the degradation of environment.

The inaugural Session was followed by the Plenary Session of the event in which there were three speakers of prominence Professor (Dr.) Birinder Pal Singh, Professor of Sociology, Department of Sociology, Punjabi University, Patiala; Professor (Dr.) Harish Kumar Verma, Director of Extension Education, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, and Professor (Dr.) S SHundal, Professor and Head, Department of Zoology, PAU, highligated various aspects on the topic of conference.

Dr. JasleenKewlani and Honey Kumar, convernor of Seminar said that the conference received more than hundred full length papers across India from experts from various fields including chemistry, zoology, geography, sociology, political science, history, economics, public administration, psychology, and literature have contributed papers to the conference.

Professor Dr. Ashwini Luthra, GNDU; and Professor Lakhwinder Singh Gill, Dr. Deepak, Punjabi University Patiala from Punjabi University Patiala and Professor Rajeev Sharma from Modi College, Patiala were the Resource persons for the Eight Business Session run parallel in the conference for paper presentations.
