The Paris climate change agreement came into force on Friday after it became international law. The accord was ratified by enough countries for it to come into effect in less than a year. This comes the week before the United Nations Climate Change Conference to be held at Marrakech, where countries will meet to discuss how to put the accord into force.

However, the UN Environment Programme has said the world needs to slash greenhouse gas emissions by 12-14 billion metric tonnes more by 2030 to limit global warming to 2 degrees Celsius. It added that the world is currently on track to see temperatures rise by 3 degrees Celsius, despite the Paris accord.

Under the Paris deal, all signatory countries are required to keep global warming within 2 degrees Celsius of pre-industrial levels. According to Nasa, 2016 is set to be the hottest year on record.
