A TIGRESS aged about 4-5 years was found dead in Huma river on the boundary of Sindewahi territorial forest and buffer area of TadobaAndhari Tiger Reserve on Friday. The tigress found floating on water had her right hind leg broken in two parts and her canines missing. She was found to have suffered internal injuries.

Authorities gave different probable reasons for her death. Range forest officer Vasant Kambdi told The Indian Express, “It appeared to be a case of a territorial fight with another existing mature tigress in the area, T22. The younger tigress may have been trying to carve out a territory in the process incurring the wrath of the bigger tigress.” Veterinary Dr. Ravi Wankhade, who performed the post-mortem, said, “No specific reason can be given due to putrefication of vital organs. It will be known only after receipt of forensic reports for which samples have been sent.” Wankhade said, “Possibility of poaching appears remote since nails and other parts were intact.” With this, the number of tigers found dead in Vidarbha this year has gone upto three, one in Deolapar Nagpur district and two in Chandrapur. In the neighbouringPench Tiger Reserve of Madhya Pradesh, deaths of three full grown tigers and two cubs have been recorded this year. 47 big cats dead this year According to Wildlife Protection Society of India (WPSI) statistics, the total number of tigers dead for various reasons including poaching that can be accounted for from this year’s seizures and actual tigers found dead is 47. The biggest seizure was of 5 tiger skins and 125 kg tiger bones in Uttarakhand on March 14. Four of these tigers were confirmed poached in Corbett National Park. Apart from these, skins and bones of 8 more tigers were seized this year: 6 kg bones at Pilibhit, 2 skins in Chattisgarh, 2 skins in Valmiki Tiger Reserve in Bihar, skull and bones in Karnataka, a skin in Kerala and a skin and bones in West Bengal.
