Sharp rise in air pollution in Delhi: Health Minister Satyendar Jain

The Financial Express , Thursday, October 13, 2016
Correspondent :
The Delhi government today said there is a sharp rise in air pollution in Delhi. Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain has blamed burning of agricultural residues in neighbouring states like Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh for the hazard that the people of the national capital territory is facing. In a strong statment, Jain asked the states concerned and the Centre to take effective measures to curb pollution. He also asked them to stop burning of agricultural residues.

Recently a report prepared jointly by TERI and the University of California, San Diego said, about 60 to 80 per cent of ozone concentration in Delhi was also attributed to sources outside the city.

Even if all emissions from Delhi were to be stopped, the PM (particulate matter) levels would still exceed the standards at several locations in the city, mainly due to higher contributions from outside regions to Delhi’s air quality, the report had said.

The safe limits of PM 2.5 and PM 10, microscopic particles that can enter and embed deep into the lungs and subsequently the bloodstream, are 60 and 100 micrograms per cubic metre respectively.
