NEW DELHI: The Delhi government on Tuesday wrote to environment ministers of Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan asking them to prohibit burning of agricultural residue in October and November. They also asked the union environment minister, Anil Madhav Dave, to issue directions to all NCR states about preventing agriculture residue burning.

The letter sent by environment minister, Imran Hussain said that with the onset of winter, Delhi would face a critical phase of air pollution aggravated by meteorological conditions like low wind speed and low temperatures which. These tend to trap pollutants and aggravate PM 2.5 (fine, respirable pollution particles) and PM 10 (coarse pollution particles) levels in Delhi.

"Detailed analysis of ambient air quality data shows PM 2.5, PM 10, gaseous pollutants like nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO) and secondary pollutants like ammonia (NH3) show an increasing trend in October and November which coincides with agricultural waste burning in neighbouring states," the letter read.

Hussain requested all three states to issue necessary instructions to prevent burning of agricultural residue. "I am sure that with concerted efforts we will be able to prevent and control air pollution in the region," the letter said.
