SILCHAR: Civil society members held a meeting in Silchar on Sunday, appealing all sections of the society to maintain peaceand communal harmony during the Durga Puja celebrations.

The meeting organized by Netaji Charta YuvaSangstha, a Silchar-based NGO, resolved to submit a memorandum to DC and SP (Cachar) to take necessary steps and ensure a peaceful puja so that common people are not harassed. Addressing the meet, Silchar Municipal Board chairmanNiharendra Narayan Tagore said the administration should set a deadline for the immersion of the Durga idols. They should be immersed between 9pm and 9am so that the common people do not face any problems while commuting, the chairman said. "Every year the people of Silchar town face problems galore because of untimely immersions and the unruly and unorganized crowd. The administration should set a deadline for the puja organizers," said Tagore.

NagarikSwarthaSangramParishad president Haridas Dutta said organizers of all big community Durga Pujas seek permission from the police and the civic authorities, but family pujas never seek any approval. This has, however, created a lot of chaos on the road. He suggested the administration should make it mandatory for all to seek permission of the authorities before organizing puja from this year. PurohitPrashikhan Kendra president Kishore Bhattacharjee said pollution control board should maintain a strict vigil so that sound and air pollution levels are maintained within permissible limits.
