MADURAI: Many political parties and environmental organisations have urged the member-secretary of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board not to give the 'consent to establish' (COE) for the Neutrino Observatory near Devaram in Theni district.

In a representation, VanniArasu of ViduthalaiChiruthaigal, G Sundarajan of PoovulaginNanbargal, DRR Senguttuvan of the MDMK, Abdul Samad of the ManithaNeyaMakkalKatchi, A K Abdul Kareem of the SDPI, Ayyanathan, journalist, K V Sivaraman of the TamizhagaVaalvurimaiKatchi and ArivuArasan of NaamTamilar said the MDMK leader had filed a petition against the granting of the COE, following which the high court bench stayed the project.

Meanwhile G Sundarrajan of PoovulaginNanbargal has filed Appeal No. 6 of 2015, against Environmental Clearance dated 01.06.2011 granted in favour of Institute of Mathematical Science, by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, for the construction of the INO.

The ministry ought to weigh in the fact that a tunnel interferes with ground water, serious problems can arise during excavation because of the water flow and the construction of tunnels often conflicts with environmental issues and the interests of the population living in the area.

The impact of blasting of rock to the tune of 6,00,000tonnes could cause earthquakes, affecting the neighbouring Idukki dam. EIA does not reveal any study, much less a detailed study, on the impact of construction of the project on the aquifer and the surface water bodies that feed three river systems - Periyar, Vaigai and Vaippar - in Idukki district, the water capital for 6 districts of Kerala and also on the 12 dams in Tamil Nadu storing 5 billion cubic metres of water, all within a radius of 50 km from the proposed site. The EIA is therefore defective and incomplete.

Hence, it is incumbent on the TNPCB to reject the applications of the chairman, Institute of Mathematical Science, they said.
