Data compiled by the Air Quality Monitoring and Research Laboratory and Environment Status Report (2015-16) reveals chocking facts about city’s air as observed between December 2015 and March 2016.

Air at Chembur, Ghatkopar, Mankhurd, Bhandup was polluted five times the set standard. It means citizens living these areas inhale toxic air, capable of causing several illnesses.

Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) level in the air ranged from 500 micrograms per cubic meter to 1,000 microgram per cubic meter from December to March.

According to the standard set by Central Pollution Control Board, the SPM should be between 100 and 200 cubic microgram per cubic meter. An increase in the level can cause health problems.

A high SPM level can settle into your lungs, causing cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. It can cause asthma attacks, difficulties in breathing and eye irritations.

In January 2016 the average SPM level was 775 at the Maravali (Chembur) air quality monitoring station.

In December 2015 the average SPM level was 775 at the Maravali (Chembur) air quality monitoring station.

The frequent fires at Deonar as well as the Mulund dumping ground are the reason behind the high level of air pollution across the city.
