Four persons have been arrested for erecting an illegal electrified fence around an agricultural land and poaching a wild boar in Gudiyatham Forest Range on Sunday.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of forest department personnel went to Gandhi Kanavai in Kallapadi beat and reserve forest. They found the four persons – Govindaraju (45), his son Aravindan (20), Sudhakaran (35) and Uthiran (40) – residents of Samiyarmalai in Gudiyatham cutting the animal after it was electrocuted and arrested them.

L. Kumar, range officer of Gudiyatham Forest Range, said Govindaraju had taken the land on lease and had cultivated ground nut. He had erected the fence and electrified it illegally using power from the nearby electricity pole.

“The four were arrested on charges of erecting the fence to hunt the wild boar for its meat. We imposed a fine of Rs. 6,000 each as per the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972,” he said.
