New Delhi: An abandoned black buck fawn was rescued from Greater Noida on Tuesday after it was found being attacked by a pack of stray dogs. The animal had wandered close to a residential area when an animal lover spotted it and called for help.

The forest department was contacted who then placed a call to animal welfare NGO Wildlife SOS. A two-member team was dispatched immediately.

"I witnessed a couple of dogs chasing after the small fawn when I was driving by. I immediately stopped the car and went and checked the animal to ensure its safety. Though slightly shaken after the incident, the animal was thankfully unhurt," said Ayush Kumar, a resident who lives nearby.

The animal was transferred to the NGO's animal rescue shelter in Delhi and will be observed until it can be released safely into the wild. Experts feel a loss in their habitat is leading to more such man-animal conflict cases.

Residents say the animal, which was found near Hanuman mandir in Greater Noida, may have wandered close to the residential area in search of food

"Habitat loss and modification, extensive poaching and illegal wildlife trade are some of the major threats to the existence of this magnificent antelope. " said KartickSatyanarayan, co-founder of Wildlife SOS.
