Guwahati: In a bid to increase footfall in the Kaziranga National Park, famed for its one-horned rhinos, the Assam government has decided to keep the park open for tourists for eight months instead of the existing six months. This is being done on an experimental basis. The park will, henceforth, remain open from October 1 to May 31.

Chief minister SarbanandaSonowal reviewed the security measures here. Expressing concern over repeated instances of rhino poaching, Sonowal said, "Improved synergy between police and the forest administration to thwart any attempt by the poachers is a must."

Sonowal also visited the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation located in Borjuri adjacent to Panbari Reserve Forest and took stock of the health of the rhinos calves rescued during flood.
