Chennai: Drones will soon fly over Tamil Nadu's forests areas to monitor poaching and wildlife in reserved forest areas. The state forest department will buy five made in India drones to monitor forest areas, forest minister Dindigul Srinivasan said in the assembly here on Tuesday.

The state government has sought necessary permissions from central agencies including the ministry of defence and Airport Authority of India for flying these high-end drones that will glide over the vast forest region to monitor and survey wildlife. At present, the forest department has recruited tribal people as anti-poaching permanent watchers to prevent poaching activities in some forest areas. These drones will also help officials prevent illegal constructions and encroachment in reserved forest areas. The five drones will cost the state 20lakh, he said.
