NEW DELHI, Aug 1 - Following unending spate of rhino poaching, the Centre has accorded sanction for creation of the Special Rhino Protection Force at Kaziranga National Park.

At least 94 rhinos were killed by poachers in Assam during the last three years, while 226 people were arrested during the period and of these six persons were convicted, Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Anil Madhav Dave said in a Rajya Sabha reply today.

About measures taken for protection of one-horned rhinoceros in Kaziranga National Park, the minister said a Rhino Task Force has been created for suggesting measures to strengthen rhino protection in the Kaziranga Tiger Reserve. The Rhino Task Force has submitted its report and suggested actions for control of poaching.

In-principle approval has been accorded for creation of the Special Rhino Protection Force at Kaziranga Tiger Reserve, the minister said.

The poaching of rhinos in Kaziranga National Park has created an outrage not only in the State but amongst the wildlife lovers across the world. The creation of the force hopefully will be able to tackle the menace of poaching, and ensure the much needed protection for rhinos.
