Four most wanted rhino poachers were arrested in Assam as the Special Task Force (STF) and Assam Police geared up a search against rhino poachers in the state. The action comes at a juncture when flood water is forcing rhinos to flee their natural habitat inside national parks and wild life sanctuaries in the state.

Assam police informed that one of the most wanted rhino poachers in the state, Abdul Hanan was arrested on Sunday. Hannan, hails from Mayong in Marigaon district near the Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary which incidentally has the highest concentration of one-horned rhinos in the world. Three more poachers named FotoMarak, Kana Lama and Moniram Orang were also arrested from KarbiAnglong district areas near the Kaziranga National Park. One .303 rifle, one magazine, 12 rounds of .303 ammunition, one .22 rifle with magazine and 22 rounds of ammunition with two silencers were recovered from the arrested poachers.

Meanwhile, wildlife personnel have mounted vigil in and around the flood affected Kaziranga National Park and Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary even as state Forest Minister, Promila Rani Brahma has sought help from people living in the vicinity of wildlife protection areas to cooperate with authorities in preventing poaching of wildlife in the state.
