AGRA: A 6-ft long python was rescued by the Wildlife SOS rescue team from a cement pole factory in Akbara Village, Agra. The snake was found to be in good health and was released back in to its natural habitat. Workers at a cement factory in Akbara Village, Agra were shocked to discover a large and rather unusual snake in the premises. The reptile had taken up shelter on top of a shed near the factory entrance and fearing for their safety, the staff immediately alerted the Wildlife SOS rapid response unit on their 24-hr helpline number (9917109666).
A team comprising of two snake rescue experts, was promptly dispatched to the location and upon arrival identified the snake as an Indian Rock Python (Python molurus), a large nonvenomous python species found in the Indian, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. This species is protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and is listed under Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES), which regulates the international trade of wildlife species. Sonu, a member of the Wildlife SOS rescue team, said, "It was a tough rescue operation for us, as we had to bring the python down from the shed, without hurting or agitating it. After requesting the staff to clear the area as a safety precaution, we managed to carefully lure the large constrictor into a safe transport container."
KartickSatyanarayan, co-founder of Wildlife SOS, said, "Although non-venomous, a python's bite can be injurious so one has to be careful while carrying out such rescue operations. The Indian Rock Python is threatened by habitat loss, poaching and is a sought after species in the illegal pet trade. Our team works hard to sensitize people to these largely misunderstood creatures and make it possible for them to co-exist in urban areas. The python was found to be in good health and was released back into the wild.
