The Paris Climate Change Convention’s directions are not being followed due to lack of financial support, said Prof Gita Sen, Distinguished Professor and Director of Ramalingaswami Centre on Equity and Social Determinants of Health, Public Health Foundation of India, Bengaluru.
Speaking at a public forum on the Paris Climate Change Agreement, organised by the Azim Premji University in the city on Thursday, she said the Paris Climate Change Convention has issued strict directions on sustainable development and social injustice.
She said that even today, a majority of countries are dependent on private players for sustainable development or depend on the UN for loans. Hence, backward countries have problems pooling in resources when it comes to sustainable development.
Dr Navroz K Dubash, Senior Fellow and Coordinator of the Climate Initiative, Centre for Policy Research, New Delhi, said it is difficult to have a one-point solution for climate change at the global level. Every country must solve its climate issue at the country level.
AnshuBharadwaj, Executive Director, Centre for the Study of Science, Technology and Policy, Bengaluru, pointed out that to attain the objectives of the Paris Convention, people must concentrate on renewable energy sources.
TejalKanitkar, Assistant Professor and Chairperson of the Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Studies at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, said authorities have a bigger responsibility of ensuring that laws on green house gas emissions are strictly enforced.
