Nainital: The carcass of a male tiger was found in Dhela range of Corbett National Park on Tuesday. According to its post-mortem report, the tiger aged 10-12 years died of a snakebite. SaketBadola, deputy director of the National Park, told TOI,"According to the post-mortem report, the tiger died of a snake bite. We have cremated the body as per the guidelines of the National Tiger Conservation Authority."

The forest officials said usually the lifespan of a tiger in the wild is 10-12 years but they live longer in captivity because of many factors such as no territorial fights, availability of food even during old age and proper medical care.

Earlier, on July 6, a 10-year-old male tiger was severely injured in a fight with another big cat and died. Its carcass was found on the Kosi river bed in Ramnagar forest division adjacent to the National Park.

According to data compiled by the Wildlife Protection Society of India, as many as 11 tigers have either been killed or found dead in Uttarakhand this year. At least 74 tigers died between January 1 and June 26 this year in the country. What is worrying is that there has been a rise in poaching-related fatalities this year, statistics collated from different parts of India by the wildlife NGO shows.
