New Delhi: The sudden climate change is wreaking havoc all over the world andAntarctica is no exception. A recent report depicts that the southern polar region could loose the habitat more than half of its penguin colonies by 2099.

In a research done by oceanographer Megan Cimino, it was found that around 60% of the AdeliePenguin habitat in Antarctica could soon disappear in next four decades as the weather will eventually become unfit for their survival.

AdeliePenguin is one of the two natives of Antarctic penguins- the other being the emperor penguin- and it inhibits the full extent of the continent.

Many environmentalists believe that climate change will hamper the two crucial and primary pathways of these penguins- the quality and availability of food and nesting habits.

Cimino explained that due to climate change, the warm sea temperature will deplete most of the fish populations and krills which is a vital diet of Adelie penguins.

According to Live Science, the hardest hit colonies may be in the West Antarctic Peninsula and surrounding islands, which have already faced declining penguin populations.
