Dehradun: Chief conservator of forest Dhananjay Mohan, who was assigned as an investigative officer for a case pertaining to recovery of five tiger skins near Rajaji Tiger Reserve in the month of March, has mentioned in his report that the crime was committed on the border of Corbett Tiger Reserve and Lansdowne forest division. He has recommended punitive action against the forest guard, range officer and sub-divisional officer of the Corbett.

The main accused Ram Chander of Bawaria gang, when held with five tiger skins and around 125 kg tiger bones, had told the police and forest officials that he along with many others had killed the tigers in Corbett. The scientists of Wildlife Institute of India had later confirmed that the four out of five tigers killed were from the Corbett. They did so after matching the stripes with the photographs available through camera traps with WII. As the matter was quite sensitive so Mohan was entrusted the investigation in the matter.

The teams of National Tiger Conservation Authority and, Wildlife Crime Control Bureau also visited the sites in Corbett, which accused has pointed out and also where tiger skins and bones were hidden in ditches at Kotkhadar area of Bijnor district in Uttar Pardesh.

"In the investigation, it has been found that the crime of killing the tigers have been committed on the border areas of Corbett and Lansdowne forest division. The accused could not corroborate having killed the tigers in Corbett," he said. More than two accused have been arrested in the matter.

Mohan further said, "I have suggested punitive action against the forest guard, range officer and SDO of the area, as it is primarily the duty of forest guard and range officer to patrol the area and also keep tab of activities going in the area. The officials at SDO level keep the record related to patrolling. It has been seen that patrolling was conducted only in some specific areas while neglecting the rest. This was detected from the registers maintained at various forest posts."

However in response to the question why the punitive action against higher -officials were not recommended who get hefty pay packets and more facilities than the lower rank , so are more accountable , he said, "The higher officials have to handle several tasks and responsibilities so they were not found accountable. Only those who were mainly handling the patrolling and failed to notice movement of poachers have been held guilty."
