Bhopal: On World Environment Day, citizens and experts mostly talk about saving electricity, planting saplings and raise concern about depleting water levels. But there are tiny and beautiful creatures which can actually save the environment - butterflies.
Their fragility leads them to react swiftly to change and are the first climate indicators and form part of the league of dogs and dolphins. Their sensitive sensors are important for the environment and make butterflies indispensable, said experts at a workshop in the city.
As of now, there are 55 varieties of butterflies in Madhya Pradesh.
But this number is dipping by the day due to environmental degradation, climate change and unavailability of regular plants for feeding. This not only raises alarm to protect butterflies, but the environment too.
"Apart from being climate indicators, butterflies also play an important role in pollination of plants which increases greenery, protects environment and balances climate. They also help in natural pest control and are indicators of biodiversity. So, disappearance of these winged creatures is more serious than just a loss of colour in the countryside," said environmentalist Ashok Gulati.
Organizing an event, Titliyan on awareness of butterflies, Gulati along with the member of "Ansh" NGO, explained the importance of butterflies and urged for their protection. Pinky Tiwari, a visitor, said "involving young generation in an event like this is a step to create a better environment where adults will feel responsible for nature and protect environment".
