Govt says 239 public projects given environmental clearance during Modi’s tenure

New Delhi: The Union environment ministry on Tuesday revealed that during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tenure it has till now given environment approvals to 239 public utility projects like mining, airports, ports and defence projects worth over Rs.500,000 crores having potential of at least 1.64 lakh jobs.

A detailed state-wise data of public utility projects given environment clearance between May 2014- April 2016 was released by the Union ministry of environment, forest and climate change on Tuesday evening.

According to the data, projects worth Rs.503,750 crore were cleared across all states which together have a potential of creating 164,239 jobs.

Among the states, Maharashtra topped the list with 35 projects worth Rs.135,634 crore having potential of 11,030 jobs.

It was followed by Andhra Pradesh with 11 projects worthRs.93,738.82 crore having potential of creating 9,758 jobs and Gujarat with 19 projects worth Rs.42,373.1 crore having potential of 4,540 jobs.

Soon after becoming the environment minister in May 2014, Prakash Javadekar had promised to give state-wise details of jobs created by the Modi government.

However, the ministry has only released the details of jobs and cost of projects which were given environmental clearance. It did not give details of wildlife and forest clearances approved by the ministry.
