CHENNAI: While rallies are one way to spread awareness about the need to protect our environment, fun-filled evenings with competitions, games and music are another to pique the crowd’s interest and create awareness. Chennaiites at the Grand Mall participated in the Eco Challenge event conceptualised by Latha Krishna of Iris events and Mother Earth Entertainers.

While a ‘giant’ game of snakes and ladders was being played by children and parents on one side, another group was busy with their paints and colours, creating an environment-themed painting on a long chart paper spread across the ground. Aakash who had a very interesting picture of a tree being grown on the heads of a man and woman, and the Earth in the shape of a heart on it, said, “It is our responsibility to protect our world. Grow more trees, save water and change our fate. The air is so polluted outside. We should be able to go out and not sit in the AC rooms all the time.”

The two-hour event also saw a greenathon presented by Haritharang, a garden shop. Stalls were put up for people to get their own saplings or sow some vegetable seeds for their garden. Every participant went home with something green. E Muralidharan, scientist and consultant for environmental and bio-medical engineering, was part of the event.

Talking to CE, he says, “We need to create awareness so that people know about global warming and climate change. Don’t cut trees; don’t destroy trees, and dispose garbage properly. Recycle, reuse and reinvent…it has to be done!” Muralidharan stopped driving cars a decade ago. His motto: if it’s less than a km, walk; cycle if the distance is 1-2 km; ride a bike if it’s 3-4 km, and beyond that, take public transport or do carpooling.

Other guests of honour included Dr Anita Paramasivam, Hemalatha Vinod, director, Style One and choreographer Sanjay Asrani. They walked the ramp along with the kids, not for a fashion show but with placards in hand that carried environment-friendly slogans, with hopes that people would think, change and make a difference.
