GUWAHATI, May 4 - Expressing serious concern over the alleged involvement of forest personnel in rhino poaching in Kaziranga National Park, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has shot off a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his immediate intervention in the matter.

Pointing out that poaching in the celebrated rhino-land was continuing even after the BJP had assumed charge at the Centre, the AASU said that the matter was of great concern not only to the people of Assam, but also to the nation as well besides the world community.

“Assam accounts for 95 per cent of the total wild population of the one-horned rhino. The matter is so serious that as per official records more than 120 rhinos have been poached during the last 10 years, and as per government statistics, only during last three years, a total of 71 rhinos have been killed. This is not only a socio-environmental issue of great concern, but also concerns our heritage,” AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath and general secretary LurinjyotiGogoi said.

Alleging that no serious, effective and scientific steps had been taken by any government to curb the menace, the AASU said that even allegations had surfaced about a nexus of forest officials and employees and Police, under which illegal poaching is striving.

“There are reports that even after three different reports at the level of Superintendent of Police, there has not been any government action. This is not a problem of the State of Assam only, but a burning issue of national and global importance, which has already attracted international attention and condemnations. Such poaching shows the cruelty of human to the innocent animals and the abject failure of the government authorities. We demand your immediate intervention in this regard, which can lead to effective and serious initiatives at the earliest to handle the crisis,” it said.
