Nagpur: Deep inside the forest, in the middle of the night, a woman looks out for poachers. She is doing her bit for conserving the forest, just like her male counterparts.

DipaliTalmale, assistant conservator of forest (ACF), anti-poaching unit (Pench Tiger Reserve), was one of the first woman officers recruited in the forest department in 2011. The 35-year-old joined as an ACF in evaluation wing, after which she was selected to head the anti-poaching team. From ground-level work to top administrative work, Dipali has mastered it all.

With around 30 women staffers working under her, she firmly believes that for women professionals there is no place for excuses, legitimate though they may be. One command she gives them all is not to let gender come in the way of professional commitments. "It is a misconception that women can't perform on the field," she says.

Dipali, who has four ranges under her, is now gearing up for Holi patrolling. "At times like these, when poachers are most active, we patrol day and night. I don't see it as a strenuous job, may be because I am so passionate about it," she says.

Dipali goes on to say that a good support system is crucial for any working woman. "Men should not be discouraging towards female colleagues. There should be no place for ego clashes. Though it was difficult being authoritative with them in the beginning, I managed to gain their respect with my hard work," she says.
