DEHYDRATED BIRD CASES ALREADY UP

Local rescuers facing such cases since a week

As winter comes to an end and temperatures spike to already- intolerable levels, several citizens have been taking steps to avoid issues caused by heat exposure, including regularly drinking fluids. However, that this dehydration problem is also on the rise amongst birds is a fact less emphasised. Every summer, local rescuers are faced with cases of birds fainting due to dehydration, and this year, they are of the opinion that the issue is cropping up earlier than usual, with several casualties coming in since last week.

"Every year, such casualties begin around March-end. However, this time, fainting birds have been observed for the last one week. I myself have rescued around 15-20 such birds," said Anil Avchite, a city-based rescuer.

Besides the inevitable rise in temperature, what affects the birds more is the scarcity of water for them to access easily. "I have been advising people to keep water in clay pots or pieces on their terraces and balcolnies for birds to come drink water from," stated Avchite.

He added that climate change is wreaking havoc on temperature fluctuations, exacerbating the issue.

The conclusion was shared by Anil Gaikwad, another city rescuer. "I have saved at least 10-15 such birds in a week. When rescued, these birds need to be given water mixed with very little sugar and a pinch of salt, just like we do for dehydrated humans. After this, keep them in solitude in the shade with a water bowl nearby, since they are already scared and shaken. Once a little better, they generally drink up the water and fly away themselves," he advised.

Birds most affected by heat stroke are generally kites and pigeons. Besides, eagles, who fly at quite a height, are also occasionally afflicted.
