Lines drawn over about 300 km; anti-poaching squads roped in

Udhagamandalam: With the undergrowth in the forest areas very dry, adequate precautionary measures have been taken, according to the District Forest Officer, Nilgiris North Division, K. Kandasamy.

Strict vigil

Speaking to press persons at Anaikatti near here on Saturday, he said that fire lines were drawn over about 300 km. Stating that a round-the-clock vigil was mounted, he said that 70 members of anti-poaching squads and thirty fire watchers were entrusted with detecting and preventing fire.

Pointing out that the tiger census operations were progressing smoothly in the division, he said that 250 persons, including forest staff and volunteers, were participating. Efforts were on to provide better amenities for tourists at Bison Valley and Kodanad View Point.

Saplings planted

To improve the health of the forest cover, 50,000 `shola' saplings were planted on 40 hectares of degraded forests in Coonoor, Kotagiri, Sholur Mattam and Aramby. Under the Hill Area Development Programme, 100 checkdams were constructed to prevent soil erosion and provide water to residents.
