Bombay High Court asks BMC to clean roads daily to reduce air pollution

Correspondent :
THE Bombay High Court Thursday said that the dust from roads and construction sites in the city was a major cause of air pollution and the declining air quality in the city. It has now asked the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to consider cleaning the city’s roads at least once a day. The observation was made while a bench of Justices V M Kanade and RevatiMohite were hearing a Public Interest Litigation seeking directions to the BMC to conserve water and stop awarding contracts for watering trees and shrubs during the monsoons. “The roads and the construction sites across the city are a major cause of concern. The dust results in several health hazards. There was a time when BMC used to wash all paved roads daily. But due to shortage of water such washing rituals are no longer possible. The BMC must, however, look at other ways of cleaning the roads at least once a day and it must cover or barricade construction sites to limit the dust from spreading,” the bench said. The court also took note of a submission made by the petitioner that dust from the city’s roads, both paved and unpaved, constituted “13 percent” air pollution in the city.

It also asked the BMC to consider the petitioner’s suggestion of using “treated water” or even “sea water” to clean the roads. The bench has granted BMC two weeks to respond to its suggestions and said that it would pass detailed directions on the next date of hearing.
