GURGAON: The state government has directed civic bodies to use pebbles to repair road dividers before the Happening Haryana investors' summit in order to curb air pollution caused by cementing of central verges and to minimise the menace of construction dust.

According to sources, chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar suggested the use of cost-effective materials like pebbles or round-shaped stones to the MCG and Huda for repair of central verges on major arterial roads instead of cementing as unloading of cement bags, mixing of cement and construction waste add to pollution.

Officials said that ahead of the investor summit, most of the roads would be repaired and a special emphasis would be laid on the maintenance of central verges and to improve the aesthetics of roads.

"At present, many central verges in several parts of the city are cemented. In some areas plantation has been done on central verges," an MCG official said.

Green activists, however, have stressed the importance of plantation on central verges to control pollution.

"Instead of turfing or using pebbles, civic bodies should plant trees on central verges. It will add much-needed greenery and will also help in bringing down pollution levels in the city," environmentalist JitendraBhadana said.

Bhadana said efforts should also be made to ensure survival of the plants. He said normally a large number of saplings are planted before a big event, but most of these plants do not survive in the absence of proper maintenance after the event.

Gurgaon deputy commissioner and MCG commissioner T L Satyaprakash said the concerns of environmentalists have been kept in mind and agreed that the best way to deal with pollution - dust pollution in particular - is to increase the green cover.

"There are plantations on central verges in certain parts of the city. It can be done in other parts of the city as well," he said.

The district administration and MCG are also planning to cover the Chakkarpur dam with green cover in the first phase. Ghata Dam, Wazirabad Dam, Jharsa and Badshapur will be covered with greenery later, officials said. "Increasing green cover is the best possible way to check dust pollution and improve air quality," Satyaprakash said.
